The United States equivalent of Boxing Day is known as “Black Friday.” The American holiday Thanksgiving falls on the last Thursday of November, about one month before Christmas. Because the day after Thanksgiving is also generally a public holiday, many people consider this the official beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Like Boxing Day in the UK, Black Friday sees retailers offering huge discounts to attract customers. For the past ten years, it has been the biggest shopping day of the year in terms of sales volume. In 2013, shoppers spent a whopping USD$61 billion on Black Friday, enough to buy a brand new luxury car for every person in Taoyuan!

The convenience of shopping at home, as well as the ability to find the best deals from around the world, is a great incentive to browse online stores. China has embraced this trend with its own shopping holiday. November 11 is called “Singles’ Day,” because the date can be written as four 1s (11.11). While the day began as a celebration of (or fight against) being alone, it has evolved into China’s most famous shopping day, especially for e-commerce. Online retailer Alibaba has been quick to take advantage of the trend, generating billions of dollars in sales for it and its partner sites. The company even trademarked the term 双十一 (double eleven) in order to brand both the date and itself as being synonymous with spending. Young single Chinese with disposable money have been quick to take advantage of online Singles’ Day sales, and though it may not be competing with Boxing Day and Black Friday yet in terms of volume, it represents the most modern take on shopping habits.

For many people, shopping is a way of life. Whether it’s to buy something for themselves or for their loved ones, consumers just can’t resist the urge to check out the next big sale. Maybe you’re the kind of person who lines up days before Black Friday or Boxing Day sales to grab the best merchandise; or maybe you prefer the comfort of comparing deals online from the safety of your own home. Either way, shopping is a fantastic pastime which shows no signs of ever disappearing from our lives.
